How To Find Proven Products YOU Can Sell on Your Shopify Store Today
Finding products to sell on Shopify can often be a daunting task.
Trudging through endless articles with opposing instructions while trying to search for those winning products out of the millions offered on AliExpress stops most people right in their tracks.
And then there are those bogus paranoias like…
- Worrying if your market is oversaturated
- Wondering if a product will actually sell
- Feeling doubtful about current trends
- Worrying if your store will fail
As I’m sure you can imagine, these uncertainties add up to wasted time that could be spent on more important aspects of your business, like store design or running ads.
So to help you cut through the clutter, we’ve put together our best tips for how to generate those winning products, all within a few hours of work.
In this guide, we’ll be reviewing tips on how to use free resources, like holiday gift guides and Etsy’s Popular Products list, as well as our best-kept secrets that have helped us make millions.
It doesn’t matter if your store is brand-new or if you’re just trying to phase in new products — this guide is guaranteed to save you weeks of searching, erase feelings of doubt, and pack your store with proven-to-sell products in just a few hours.
We know you’re excited.
But before we dive in, let’s take a step back and cover some of the foundational concepts you should keep in mind while exploring potential products.
1. Avoid anything that is trademarked.
This one is extremely important, which is why it’s at the top of the list.
If you’re not licensed to sell a trademarked item, you WILL find yourself swimming in a pool of legal issues.
A trademark is a legal property right that doesn’t discriminate against prosecuting even the smallest of business owners, and the bigger the name, the bigger the disastrous outcome.
If you are unsure if you are licensed to sell a particular product, you probably aren’t so don’t sink the ship before it leaves the port.
2. Keep in mind the potential market size of each product.
There’s no point in selling a product if there’s no one to buy it, right?
To find products with a ravenous audience, you can use tools like Google Trends or any social media outlets, such as Pinterest and Reddit, to discover what the market is demanding.
For example, a simple “Mens Watches” search like the one below…
Not only generates a graph that tells you how popular that search term is currently in real time…
…But it also narrows down where the bulk of these search terms are coming from geographically, so you can focus your targeting.
3. Look for products with high-profit margins.
It’s no secret that a downside to dropshipping can be the low-profit margins.
But if you’re able to find items that you can mark-up at a competitive rate, then you’ll be all set.
Products with high-profit margins include jewelry, sunglasses, beauty products, candles, and more (a quick Google search will reveal more categories!).
Okay, that covers the basics you should know before searching for potential products.
Now, let’s focus on the different channels that will give you the best ideas for generating winning products.
Free holiday gift guides
There is no better time than now to take advantage of holiday gift guides.
At this moment, the internet is littered with articles like, “The top 10 gifts every foodie wants for Christmas” and “18 gifts for the person in your life who won’t shut up about CBD,” so don’t be afraid to dive in.
Here’s one thing to keep in mind:
Most gift guides are often packed with expensive, branded items (like Apple Airpods or an All-Clad Sous Vide), BUT, that doesn’t mean you have to go for those exact items.
AliExpress has hundreds of alternatives that you can sell just as easily.
If you’re in doubt, check out Urban Outfitter’s version of “airpods,” which don’t have the Apple stamp of superiority, but have sold out (and are apparently on backorder)…
Now, let’s take a look on AliExpress and see what we find…
As you can see, you don’t need to have a well-known brand name or hefty price tag to find and sell highly-coveted items.
If you take a few minutes to search, you’ll find that AliExpress almost always has a comparable product that people will pay for.
And guess what? Gift guides are not just limited to the end-of-the-year holidays.
There’s plenty of other holidays that involve gift guides, from Valentine’s Day to Mother’s Day, which you could (and should) take advantage of.
To plan ahead, try using this holiday calendar to keep track of any major holidays coming up throughout the year.
Amazon’s New and Interesting Finds section
The next resource we’re going to share is every dropshipper’s arch nemesis: Amazon.
Amazon has a “New and Interesting Finds” section on their platform, which showcases unique products you wouldn’t discover with a typical Amazon search.
It’s their own little “trending product portal” located at the very top of their header…
The reason we recommend this as a product-hunting tool is that each item is voted by favorites, so you can easily see how desirable each product is.
Better yet, each of the products you find on this page will also be found on AliExpress.
Don’t believe us? Look for yourself at the comparative results below.
This product is from Amazon…
….And THIS product is from AliExpress…
It’s hard to tell the difference, right?
Again, we’ve proven that with a little bit of searching, you can find similar or exact products that are selling out in other stores right now.
Simply taking some time to do this kind of searching will make the difference between having a store full of winners or a store full of duds.
Etsy’s “Popular Right Now” drop-down list
The next reservoir of one-of-a-kind, in-demand products is Etsy.
With Etsy, you can easily discover trending products by using their “Popular Right Now” drop-down list directly in their search bar.
The drop-down changes in real-time so you can see what current shoppers are interested in.
All you have to do is click the search bar at the top of the page, and then Etsy kindly generates their ongoing popular lineup…
From here, you can simply run a search on AliExpress for any of those popular items and voila — you’ve got yourself a store full of trending products.
But keep in mind…
Using this method will only show you the products people are searching for right now.
It won’t tell you which products are most popular, how many people are interested in them, or any other information that will help you pick a winning product.
In fact, all of the methods we’ve shared today will only point you in the right direction. They won’t give you all the answers.
For example, using the tips we’ve shared, you’ll be able to see trending products, but how do you know which products to choose from that list?
How do you know which products have already been bought hundreds of times?
And how do you know what ad copy will work on your audience?
The best way to answer questions like these is NOT by guessing (which is what 95% of dropshippers do).
To make informed decisions, you must have data, which is exactly what our tool, Cookie, can provide you.
Meet Cookie: the tool that can stuff your store full of proven products in just TWO hours
Like you, we used to read guides like this, looking for fast answers to questions like those we posed above.
And like you, we used to waste countless hours searching for trending products on various sites, finding comparable options on AliExpress, and then manually importing them into our stores.
It wasn’t until we realized just how much time we were wasting that we decided to build Cookie, a tool that would save us time and headache while giving us a competitive advantage.
Here’s what makes Cookie special:
In addition to showing you popular products on various platforms (like Etsy), Cookie also provides you with a deeper level of insight around those products, including how many people have viewed, favorited, liked, shared, or even bought.
To show you what we mean, let’s walk through each component of Cookie together, starting with the Etsy Product Search tool.
Etsy Product Search
The Etsy product search tool enables you to see products that people are buying by simply typing in a keyword.
From there, you can sort the results by the number of favorites and views per product, which allows you to sift through the clutter and select a product that people will actually buy.
Here’s an example:
We took the air planter from Etsy’s “Popular Right Now” list above and sorted by favorites — just look at the results!…
As you can see, you’re not only viewing popular products, but you’re able to see how many people viewed and saved each one, giving you clear direction on which products to choose.
Just make sure to have your location set to the United States (even if you’re abroad), as that will improve the quality of your results.
Hunt for Products
The second tool within Cookie allows you to reveal ads and products with the most engagement on Facebook.
You can sort by engagement, viral potential, and relevance, which will not only reveal in-demand products, but also the ad copy that’s working on the audience.
This means you can find popular products AND learn how to engage with your audience in a way that actually resonates.
First, you type in any kind of phrases that may turn up an ad, for example…
From there, you’ll be presented with Facebook ads that contains those keywords, like those shown below…
Once you’ve got your results, you can use the filter feature to find the most popular products and most successful ads.
Reveal Top Sellers
One of the ways you can gain a competitive advantage is to find and fill the market gaps that your competition is missing out on.
To do that, you can use Reveal Top Sellers, the third tool within Cookie that exposes top-selling products within ANY Shopify store.
You can use it to compete for pricing, enhance product descriptions, or even find a similar product that will resolve more customer pain points.
As long as you have the Shopify URL, you can see the store’s top sellers, whether they’re your biggest competitor or a related brand.
